Dear Friends,

The fall Ango period will begin with a Zazenkai on Sunday, September 11th, and will end with a Zazenkai on Sunday, December 4th.

At Eiryu-ji we hold two Ango periods a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. These training periods date back to the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, who instructed his disciples to gather for intensive training during the monsoon months. In the Zen tradition, we use this training periods to "tighten up the slack" in specific areas of our lives, and to deepen the commitment to Zazen and to the practice of the three treasures, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. This opportunity is offered to all practitioners who are connected to the Eiryu-ji Sangha, whether in the US or abroad.

At this Fall Ango I would like us all to become more intimately acquainted with the profound and original teachings of the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and the 16 Bodhisattva precepts. These will be emailed separately for your reference and study.

Please listen to the last Teisho (of Aug 28) and fill out the below Ango commitment form. If you are participating in the Zazenkai on the 11th, print it out and bring the form with you. If you are not participating you can fill it out digitally and email it to me. One of our members will read it on your behalf during the entry ceremony.

As sincere practitioners we are taking on the practice wholeheartedly and choose to welcome the challenge of an Ango even if we feel we rather skip it. This is the attitude we need to cultivate in regards to all aspects of Zen practice.

* Please note that our center in Wyckoff will be closed during this Labor Day weekend.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Love to all,
Junryu

Dear Friends,

- Myogen and I will be away from Friday, 8/12 until Saturday, 8/20. All scheduled Zazen periods will go on without interruption, so please stay committed to your practice and support our Sangha with your presence.

- We are scheduled to hold an all-day Zazenkai on Sunday, 8/28. Please contact me and confirm your participation in the next couple of days so we can plan the event.

- If you are interested in attending our fall Sesshin and have not registered yet contact me as soon as possible. We currently hold only two Sesshins a year and these events are absolutely crucial for Zen practice. As your teacher I have a responsibility to tell you that you must make Sesshins an integrated part of your practice. The dates are announced well in advance so we can all make plans ahead of time. As long as you are not giving these events a priority in your life your progress will be curtailed.

Love to all,
Junryu

Some members have asked for a copy of the Japanese version of the Heart Sutra, so here it is. It will be helpful if you can practice chanting this on your own, as we will be incorporating this version in our liturgy more often. The "Atta Dipa" and "Opening the Dharma" chants are also included in this email.

Incomparably profound and minutely subtle,

Junryu

Dear Friends,

Our annual fall-Sesshin at Dai Bosatsu Monastery is on October 20-23, 2016. As some of you already know, this is an incredible opportunity to experience Zen practice at a traditional setting, a beautiful facility, and breath-taking surroundings. The monastery is situated on a secluded mountain, by the highest lake in the Catskill region in NY state, about 2.5 hours from Wyckoff. This Sesshin will include Zazen, Dokusan, Dharma talks, chanting, traditional jihatsu-style meals, Yoga, and outdoor kinhin. See attached photos, and visit their website for more information: http://www.zenstudies.org/daibosatsuzendo.html. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to dive deep into our practice and experience monastic life for a few days, away from the ongoing demands and challenges.

Over the past couple of years I have had the privilege to get to know some of the residents at the monastery, the members at their NY temple, and more recently their Abbot, Shinge Roshi. I find them all to be wonderful people, and dedicated practitioners who understand what it means to practice for "the welfare of all creation".

There are two options for participation: two nights, or three nights.

1st option: From Thursday, 10/20 at 2:00 pm - until Sunday, 10/23 at 2:00 pm. Total cost including all meals: $435.

2nd option: From Friday, 10/21 at 2:00 pm - until Sunday, 10/23 at 2:00 pm. Total cost including all meals: $300.

A non-refundable deposit of $75 is due by July 31st, and the remainder is due by September 10th.

Registration is now open. Please contact me as soon as you can to confirm your participation.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Junryu

Dear Friends,

The dojo will be open for Zazen this Sunday (7/3) from 9:00 until 10:30. Myogen and I will be at Dai Bosatsu monastery for a Sesshin and their 40th anniversary celebration.

Enjoy the long weekend and the holiday.

Love to all,
Junryu

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow (June 5) we will conclude the spring Ango with a half day sit from 8:30 until 12:00. We will end with a Mondo (discussion) about your personal experience during this Ango and the role of intensive practice periods in dissolving our inner resistance. This is an important event so please consider making plans to attend and share your voice and energy with the sangha. The weather forecast for tomorrow seems to be cooperating with our event as it calls for rain and thunderstorm…

See you on the cushion!

Love to all,
Junryu

Hi Everyone,

The dojo will be open for Zazen this Sunday, at 9:00 - 10:30. Please come in to sit if you are available.

Love,
